Milestone on the A361 just to the north of Pines Dean. Set up just prior to the closure of the Turnpike Trust in 1879 and inscribed '8/BARUM', from the Medieval Latin for Barnstaple.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

A milestone is marked as 'MS. Barnstaple 8' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

A milestone is marked as 'M.S Barnstaple 8' on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map.

'Milestone Barnstaple 8' is shown on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey 6 inch map.

Site visit 11th July 2007. Milestone located approximately 5 metres to the north of the entrance to Pines Dene, buried in a bank in an overgrown verge, on the east side of the road.
Set up just prior to the closure of the Turnpike Trust in 1879 and inscribed '8/BARUM', from the Medieval Latin for Barnstaple.
The 2001 survey found it to be upright, with white paint residues in the lettering, but in 2007 itt was recorded as worn, knocked over and buried in vegetation.
