Summary

Site of Higher Gortleigh which is shown as a homestead on the north side of the lane on the Sheepwash Tithe Map and Apportionment. By the late 19th century it had been largely rebuilt just to the north-west. Today only a single range of buildings is still extant on the north-west side of the late 19th century yard.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The Tithe Map depicts a homestead at Higher Gortleigh on the Sheepwash Tithe Map (Plot 578) on the north side of the lane, comprising a large L-shaped range with a rectangular building immediately to the east.

The first edition Ordnance Survey map shows Higher Gortleigh to have been relocated to the north-west. It is depicted as a group of five buildings around an irregular shaped yard to the north of the road. The two buildings on the east side of the yard are possibly the remains of the L-shaped ranged shown on the Tithe Map.
