Full description

A Post Medieval water meadow system, known locally as a catchwater meadow, is visible on aerial photographs as a series of earthworks south west of Lydcott Hall, Brayford. A series of approximately parallel gutters were used to distribute flowing water evenly over the surface of the meadow in order to prevent freezing in winter and encourage early growth in spring, thereby providing extra feed for livestock. This system appears to be connected to the farmyard at South Lydcott, suggesting that this was an integrated system which also distributed liquid manure as fertiliser to the fields. Several of the leats are still in use as drains and are marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10000 map. Other details: Monument Number 1488891.

Knight, S., 2008, Site visit to Lydcott House, Brayford (Personal Comment). SDV340563.

Lydcott retains evidence of a very complete water management system which includes numerous leats, mostly surviving as earthworks, running across steep slopes as part of a catch meadow system.
