Full description
Turpin, J. W., 1982, Braunton Great Field and Marshes, 7 (Report - non-specific). SDV341027.
The water is discharged via the Great Sluice in the sea bank. This is a particularly impressive feature, its inner face being of 3 spans in massive aslar blocks between semi-circular piers. Other details: Photograph.

Sluice to drain marshes, circa 1811 - 1815, by James Green, engineer. Coursed and dressed stone revetment walls with 3 segmentally arched sluice openings with 2 semi-circular retaining walls. The piers are grooved for sluice gates to slide down. Continuous impost around piers and retaining walls at springing level of arches. The opposite outer end of sluice has retaining walls at right angles either side of timber sluice gates to single arched sluice. Other details: 9/36.
