Full description

Department of Environment, 1989, Clovelly, 24 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV4533.

77 and including forecourt wall and gate.
House. Early 18th century, probably altered in the 19th century, repaired 1918 by Christine Hamlyn. Rendered and whitewashed, emphasised plastered quoins, hipped and gabled side roofs, brick stacks to eacn side of the front, to the left very tall
Plan: rectangular main range, central hall flanking rooms.
Exterior: basement, single storey and attic, main front onto the street of 1:1 windows, on first floor, 12-pane 2-light casements in gabled half-dormers with fretwork bargeboards, on the ground floor a large canted bay to the left with 4 multi-paned casements, flat lead roof, a 20th century pane sash window flush-mounted to the right of ground floor, exposed sash boxes. Central door opening, with an 18th century 6-
panelled door, thick frame, 2-pane transom-light. Ground floor drops away to the left to form a basement; left return with door opening to the basement, also three 2-light casements with glazing bars, and a pair of French windows giving onto a 20th century concrete balcony with 3 rough rubble supports. Rubble forecourt wall with a central ornamental gate.
Interior: with early 18th century plaster ceiling with strapwork ornamentation to left of ground floor.
Roof: re-roofed in 1918. Other details: LBS number 91126.
