Full description

Department of Environment, 1989, Clovelly, 50 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV4533.

Two cottages 30 metres south-west of Wrinkleberry School.
House, now divided into 2 houses. Early 17th century, altered in 18th century when divided into 2 dwellings, addition to right end 19th century when the whole building was also refenestrated. Stone walls, rendered and colourwashed, gabled Delabole slate, scantle and rag
slates in 4 pitches to roof, 4 stacks with 19th century brick shafts.
Plan: single room depth, formerly of 3-room and through-passage plan. Lower end to left. To left of the former passage the former kitchen with a gable-end fireplace with an oven. Room to right of the former passage with an axial stack backing onto the passage. Inner room to right end. In the C18 when the house was divided into 2, the through-passage was blocked at the back and turned into an entrance lobby at the front and a pantry at the rear. The lower room was made into a 1-room cottage incorporating the through-passage, at this time a new staircase was made to the first floor. The upper 2 rooms became another cottage, a hall and staircase being inserted in the inner room, the staircase being renewed in the 19th century. Also in the 19th century an additional room was added at the right end with an inserted stack. The front of the right half of the building was thrown out, probably in the 19th century.
Exterior: 2 storeys, 1:2:1 windows on the first floor, 1 and 2-light 19th century casements. 2 door openings, 19th century plank doors, 1 with a ledge hood.
Interior: room to extreme right of ground floor with a gable-end fireplace, chamfered wooden lintol with ogee-bar stops, oven. Centre room with a chamfered axial beam with ogee stops.
Roof: appears to be renewed 18th century. Other details: LBS number 91182.
