Summary

In the grounds of Houndtor Inn, Type A. The head, with a short piece of shaft, of a cross of rough rectangular section. On one face between the arms there is an incised cross. The shaft broken away below the arms, is missing. The existing portion of the cross was taken out of the adjacent hedge during 1939.

Stone cross situated in the ground of Hound Tor Inn (Tea Gardens).
(Masson Phillips Type A). The head, with a short piece of shaft, of a cross of rough rectangular section. On one face between the arms there is an incised cross. The shaft, broken away below the arms, is missing. The existing portion of the cross was taken out of the adjacent hedge during 1939 (SX7390 7916). (Citing Masson Phillips, 1940)
The present position of the stone cross haed is SX7388 7915. It lies on the ground close to a shed of the Hound Tor Inn. Masson Phillips' description is correct. It stood in the hedge on what was believed by the present occupier to be its shaft but which is in actual fact an ordinary stone gate post. Where it came from originally was not ascertained. Small sketch (not to scale) included (24/4/1953).
