Pair of small houses, circa 1830-40. Plastered stone rubble with front lightly blocked out as ashlar; end stacks with exposed brick chimneyshafts and old pots; slate roof. Plan: Mirror plan, each unit one room wide and 2 rooms deep. Exterior: 2 storeys and attics; symmetrical 3-window front. Outer window bays recessed between full-height pilasters and projecting central bay. Central paired doorways with shared stucco Tuscan architrave, flat pilasters to entablature. Recessed doorways now contain 20th century part-glazed doors. Blind central first-floor window. Outer windows are 12-pane sashes. End pilasters with moulded string courses. Plain eaves to parallel roof and lower pitch to right roof over No.4. A 19th century gabled dormer to No.3, wavey bargeboards and pair of small horned sashes without glazing bars. More 12-pane sashes to rear. Interior not inspected but likely to be of interest. The houses of Charles Street enclose the west side of the Market Square, and comprise a good group of artisan dwellings. The whole area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on land reclaimed from the old tidal mill pool.
