Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Row of three structures aligned east-west shown on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map at North Hooe Mine.

Buck, C. + Knight, S., 2009, North Hooe (Correspondence). SDV347168.

Site of dwelling house shown on abandoned mine plan of circa 1873. No remains visible.

Meaton, C, 2023, North Hooe Silver and Lead Mine- North Hooe, Bere Alston, Devon- Conservation Assessment, 28, Photograph 17 (Report - Survey). SDV366064.

Captain's House (7). There were no obvious surviving structural remains within the field at this location and only limited signs of terracing or a building platform. That said, there were some low, ill-defined earthworks within the general area, as well as some differential plant growth in the grass which was interspersed with patches of nettles. This normally indicates a different matrix in the underlying soil/sub soil. The landowner also recalls large stones that were once present in the area, although these have since gone.
There were no obvious surface remains and the degree of preservation for any buried remains is uncertain, although basal layers and/or footing structures surviving below the ground surface, are considered likely. If present, it is likely that buried deposits will be in a stable condition, given that the field is maintained as pasture and not currently ploughed.
