Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Tramway or trackway leading to the quay at 'North Nooe Mine' shown on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map.

Meaton, C, 2023, North Hooe Silver and Lead Mine- North Hooe, Bere Alston, Devon- Conservation Assessment, 10, 31-33, Photographs 21-22 (Report - Survey). SDV366064.

Tramway and Quay (11). The route of the former Tramway is readily legible in the modern landscape, measuring approximately 50m long by 4m wide, and flanked by trees, which creates the visual impression of an avenue. The route is terraced into the slope and runs tangentially across the lower valley slope, from the Soil Heaps (12) to the Site of a former Quay located alongside the river and identified by a flat area of exposed bedrock at the water’s edge (Photograph 22). The historic form of the Quay is not obvious, other than the Tramway terminating there at a point of obvious and ready access to the water. There were no obvious structural features visible, such as timbers or Quay walls, although a possible vertical wall was noted, retaining the slope from encroaching onto the exposed bedrock. The Quay was viewed from above, and not closely approached.
There were no structural features surviving above ground, but basal layers and/or features may survive below the ground surface of the Tramway. Other features relating to the Quay may also be present but were not identified as part of this Survey, either due to the water level, or being obscured by vegetation and/or the viewing vantage point. The Site of the Tramway and Quay are considered to be in stable condition, and if buried deposits are present, they condition is uncertain but currently undisturbed.
