Full description

National Monuments Record, 2007 - 2009, National Monuments Record Index incorporating Exmoor National Park National Mapping Programme for SS63NE (National Monuments Record Database). SDV343039.

A small sub-circular mound is visible on aerial photographs in a field west of Bratton Fleming Barrows. Like Bratton Fleming Barrows, it is situated on the summit of the hill with excellent views of the surrounding area. It is slightly smaller than the other barrows, but given its location and proximity it is likely to be the remains of a cairn or mutilated barrow, probably dating to the Bronze Age. Other details: Monument Number 1488968.

Platell, A. + Armstrong, J., 2010 + 2011, Land at Bratton Fleming, Devon: Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment, 4 (Report - Assessment). SDV347688.

A barrow lies in the western part of the site for development which was detected by aerial photography. It lies on the summit of the hill and may be a cairn or truncated barrow. Other details: Figure 1.

Hale, D., 2011, Land at Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, Devon: Geophysical Survey, 6-7 (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV347687.

During geophysical survey a curvilinear anomaly was identified which could possibly reflect part of a ring ditch associated with the remains of a round barrow noted by aerial photography. Other details: Figures 4-5.

Platell, A, 2011, Land At Four Cross Way Bratton Fleming, Devon, 1, 6, Fig. 2, 5, 10, 11 (Report - Evaluation). SDV347797.

Land At Four Cross Way, archaeological evaluation conducted in advance of a proposed development on land at Four Cross Way. The works comprised the excavation of 22 trial trenches.

Remains of two possible barrows were identified in trenches 4 and 16. This barrow identified in trench 16 is better preserved than the barrow to the north-east but does not form a visible earthwork on the landscape.
