Full description
Liversidge, C., 06/03/2003, Tale Farm, Payhembury. Stowford Water Barn, Kentisbeare. Allercombe Farm, Rockbeare (Correspondence). SDV344414.
Child, P., 08/04/2003, Tale Farm, Payhembury (Correspondence). SDV344415.
Large but somewhat decrepit example of a Devon corn barn which seems to have originally had two threshing floors. The western end has been rebuilt in blockwork replacing the original stone and cob. This end of the building also contains the remains of two jointed cruck trusses which notched collars. These are typical of the 17th century so this end of the barn at least dates to this time. The rest of the barn has plain trusses which are probably 18th century in date. Whether these are replacedments of earlier trusses or if the building was extended is not possible to say. The roof is clad in sheeting. Child considered that the condition of the barn and its position adjacent to the road and opposite another farmhouse made it a not very satisfactory candidate for domestic conversion.
Jones, T. L., 2003, Tale Farm - Barn Survey. Structural Inspection and Report (Report - Survey). SDV344416.
Detached masonry, cob and brick building under a corrugated metal roof supported on rough timbers on A frame trusses. The gable ends are of block to the western end and masonry and cob to the east with part timber infill. Ground floor at two levels separated by a timber boarded partition. The barn is generally in very poor condition and extensive repair and strengthening works would be needed prior to any consideration of reuse. See report for full details.
