Full description

Smart, C., 2009, Archaeological Recording During an Extension to the Heathfield Integrated Waste Management Facility, Heathfield, Devon, 5-8, 11-17 (Report - Watching Brief). SDV344431.

A number of shallow ditches and gullies, mainly on a north-east to south-west orientation, were observed to the south-west of hedgebank C. Some of these were regular in plan and section, and were clearly man-made, whilst others had a more irregular sinuous character that followed the undulating topography, and may be natural in origin. A springhead, issuing to the east, was located just to the south of the hedgebank. No finds were recovered from this area. This complex of ditches and gullies appears to relate to a single system of drainage, dug over a short period of time, probably in the post-medieval period, with possibly some modification in the 1970s.
