'School' marked on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map.

Passmore, A. J., 2003, Archaeological Recording at the Former Topsham First School, Majorfield Lane, Exeter (Report - non-specific). SDV344447.

Topsham Infant School developmed from a former Quaker meeting house and Wesleyan chapel, which had an associated burial ground. The school buildings occupy the north-east and north-west sides of the site. The remainder of the site is a playground which is partially infilled with later buildings. The earliest building on the site is the 18th century Quaker chapel in the north-west corner of the site which appears to have been refurbished and its seating capacity increased with the addition of galleries by the Wesleyans in the 19th century. The doorway, in the front elevation, which has a 'spider web' fanlight and the tall arched sash windows are compatible with an 18th century date. The chapel was extended, presumably at the time of its conversion to a school circa 1852 by the addition of a room (A) against its north-east wall. Additional rooms were subsequently added as the school.developed in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century.
