Full description
Context One Archaeological Services, 2009, Land to the East of 'Castle Dene', Culmstock Road, Hemyock, Devon, ii, 8 (Report - Excavation). SDV344454.
A large quantity of slag (200 pieces) was found during excavation in a wet layer of humic material, probably derived from a rubbish deposit. The deposit dated to between the 12th and 14th centuries may have come from the vicinity of the castle or from an area of iron-working activity nearby. The layer also contained charcoal and iron nails.
