According to the documentary research accompanying this report, Lustleigh manor is probably 'Southworthy' in the Domesday Book and by the 13th century belonged to the Widworthy family. Various documentary references to the manor exist to indicate the ownership history of the manor and in the 16/17th century was used as a rectory, although the rectors did not always live there. In the 1830s extensive repairs were undertaken and an additional domestic wing was added. In 1926 it was sold and a new more conveniently located rectory was constructed so after this time it was forbidden to refer to it as the ‘Rectory’. In the 1950s the house was divided into smaller dwellings, which was not entirely successful but today the main medieval house has been well-restored.
