Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the early-mid 19th century, based on cartographic evidence, but may be older. Tithe Map from the 1840s shows the farmhouse and a single additional building; these are altered by the later 19th century when the farm was developed. Included in the Dartmoor Historic farmstead survey; visited in 1997. A long leat from stream on Thornworthy Down once powered a turbine here; machinery for this is now removed.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, Plot 1351 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

'Thornworthy' is depicted on the 1840s Chagford Tithe Map; 'House Barn' marked on the apportionment. The farmstead comprises two buildings, both aligned east-west on the map. The farmhouse lies at the centre of the farm plot and one additional building is shown to the north on the boundary of the farm plot.

By the late 19th century historic map depiction, Thornworthy has been extensively developed and now comprises a range of buildings bordering the farm yard on three sides; west, north and east, incorporating the farm building shown on the Tithe Map. Additional building / extension now shown on the northern side of the farmhouse and further structures shown to the south of the farm.
