Full description
Sheldon, L., 2010, Land Around Pinn Court Farm, Pinhoe, Devon. Archaeological Evaluation (Report - Evaluation). SDV347870.
A curvilinear ditch, possibly representing a ringditch with a projected diameter of approximately 10 metres, was identified immediately to the east of the shallow narrow ditch. It comprised up to 0.48 metres wide with a 'U' shaped profile, that contained a single clayey silt fill. A fill of a ditch contained six sherds of Late Iron Age pottery. An environmental sample, recovered from the ditch identified quantities of charcoal, flint, burnt bone, burnt stone and magnetic material.
An irregular pit and a pit/ditch terminal were located within the interior of the ring-ditch. One pit measured 0.4 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep, and contained no dating evidence. The pit/ditch terminal measured 0.2 metres wide and 0.11 metres deep, and also contained no dating evidence.

Curvilinear positive anomaly which may represent an archaeological structure, possibly a ring ditch or round house, identified by geophysical survey to the north of Pin Court Farm. There is a suggestion of a small pit within the potential structure. Other details: Figure 4, site 20; figure 9.

The second of two penannular gullies in Area 5 was cut through the eastern side of SDV77292. With a diameter of 11.2m it was slightly smaller than its neighbour. The gully had steeply sloping sides and a concave base, measured 0.7m in width and averaged 0.35m deep. It attained a maximum depth of 0.5m at the northern terminal, within which was a largely complete Middle Iron Age vessel (58 sherds, 904g). The opposing terminal contained conjoining sherds from another single Middle Iron Age vessel (56 sherds, 561g). Other finds from the gully comprised 13 less diagnostic sherds of broadly Iron Age date, and seven sherds of residual Middle Bronze Age pot. The gully had an opening, presumably corresponding with the entrance of the roundhouse, to the south-east. This measured 4.6m across. Within the area enclosed by the gully, and slightly off-centre, was a shallow, sub-circular pit, 0.57m by 0.52m by 0.07m deep. No datable finds were recovered from this feature, although its fill incorporated a moderate amount of charcoal. It was uncertain whether the feature represented the remains of a structural post-setting or a pit.
