Full description

Le Messurier, B., 1979, Post-Prehistoric Structures of Central North Dartmoor. A Field Survey, 70 (Article in Serial). SDV269283.

Visited on 14th May 1976. At SX 59358135. On right bank of Tavy at Tavy Head. Internal measurements of hut 2.0 metres by 4.7 metres, the walls made of large blocks. Tin streaming nearby. (Tavy Head Letterbox mortared into one corner in 1975). An association with tin-streaming indicates a pre-1700 date.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1980, SX58SE28, SX58SE28 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV268751.

(16/10/1980) A tinners' hut at SX 59358135, as described by Le Messurier (1979).
The walling is 1.0m wide and o.6m maximum height; there is a doorway near the north west corner. (A note in the building states that the letterbox was removed 13 10 79). (Extent of tin-streaming shown on 1: 10 000 map). Surveyed at 1:10 000 on MSD. See ground photograph.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on Royal Air Force verticals.

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 110, Map 33, Site 2 (Monograph). SDV219155.

Tinners' hut '2' of 2.0 metres by 4.5 metres on the north side of the River Tavy to the south of South Tavy Head. Only the lowest course of the building remains.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(03/08/1995) SX 59378137. A ruinous former tinners hut lies within streamworks (Monument HOB UID 1063510) on the right bank of the River Tavy, 600 metres from its source. The building is oriented north to south and measures 2.3m by 4.5m internally with an entrance in the west wall near the NW corner. A leaning slab on the south side of the entrance probably represents one of the door jambs. All traces of the former letterbox have been effaced.

Probert, S. A. J. + Newman, P., 2003-2004, Measured survey North Dartmoor Military Range Okehampton Range: Monument Baseline Condition Survey (Report - Survey). SDV350801.

(10/08/2004) As described in 1995. Condition remains unchanged.
