Full description

Le Messurier, B., 1979, Post-Prehistoric Structures of Central North Dartmoor. A Field Survey, 70 (Article in Serial). SDV269283.

Visited on 11th October 1975. At SX 57188320. A hut 7.0 metres from the left bank of the Tavy. One course of earth fast stones, 1.8 metres by 3.0 metres.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SX58SE24, SX58SE24, photograph (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV268759.

(02/10/1979) SX 57178312. Scanty remains of a building only 0.4 metres high, with a possible entrance to the north; it is otherwise as described by Le Messurier and probably associated with the nearby tin streaming.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on Royal Air Force verticals,

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 110, Map 33, Site 5 (Monograph). SDV219155.

One of two tinners' huts '5' of circa 3.0 metres by 2.0 metres to the north of the junction of the River Tavy with the Eastern Red Lake.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(02/08/1995) SX 57178315. A ruinous structure at the foot of the steep east facing slope above the left bank of the River Tavy, 100 metres downstream from its confluence with Eastern Red Lake. The former building, on the edge of streamworks (Monument HOB UID 1063510) is now little more than a crude rectangle of stone and boulders measuring 3.4 metres east to west by 1.7 metres internally. The reed-filled interior is devoid of detail and there is no obvious entrance. The positioning and construction of this structure are consistent with its former use as a tinners' hut.
This site was previously recorded as part of Monument HOB UID 440646.

Probert, S. A. J. + Newman, P., 2003-2004, Measured survey North Dartmoor Military Range Okehampton Range: Monument Baseline Condition Survey (Report - Survey). SDV350801.

(21/08/2003) This feature remains as described in 1995. There is no evidence of recent damage.

English Heritage, 2005, Survey Information (miscellaneous date) (Report - Survey). SDV345855.

Rectangular building shown on survey.

Ordnance Survey, 2023, Mastermap 2023 (Cartographic). SDV365227.

'Tinners Hut' shown on modern mapping.
