Summary

This farmstead dates to at least the early 13th century, based on documentary sources, and is on the site of a Saxon estate referred to in 1086. The layout has changed little since the 19th century historic map depictions of the farm.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

'White Oxton' is depicted on the Tithe Map, 775 on the apportionment. The farm consists of the rectangular former manor house in the north-eastern corner of a roughly triangular-shaped farm, with three further rectangular farm buildings to the south and west of the house.

Whitoxen. The late 19th century historic map shows the farm is largely unchanged from the Tithe Map depiction, although the building to the south of the house is now gone.

The site of a Saxon estate held in 1086 by an unreleased Englishman. Mentioned in 'Testa de Nevil'. Descents after 1285 are given.

Whiteoxen is 'Whittekesdon' in 1242, 'Witteskesdon' in 1285, 'Whyttokesdon' in 1303 and 'Whittockesden' in 1326.

Modern mapping shows 'White-Oxen Manor'. The layout is mostly similar to the late 19th/early 20th century historic maps, although the most southerly farm building appears to have been extended in the later 20th century.
