Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 24 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Hedge from a point east of Sheepridge Farm, along the side of the upper edge of the valley for a length of approximately 1500 metres to Whim Shaft. This hedge may well have been an old top of valley side boundary, separating the wooded hillslope of the valley from Morwell Down to the east. The hedge is approximately 1 metre high in places and 1 metre wide, and its condition varies considerably along its length, with forestry access routes having been cut along some of its route and removing evidence for its location. Other details: Figure 35, site 3. Map object based on this Source.

Buck, C., 2010, George & Charlotte Mine, Morwell, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 40 (Report - Assessment). SDV345606.

An old hedge line shown on an 18th century map, which formerly marked the boundary between Morwell Down and the steep Tamar Valley woodland. It is highly likely that mining operations and the construction of mine access tracks, followed by mining closure, resulted in land to the east of the hedge line (within the study area), being cultivated with woodland. Other details: Figures 7-10, 18: site 28.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 36 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The Hedge ran from a point east of Lower Sheepridge Farm, on a general north-west to south-east alignment, for approximately 1.5 kilometres, as far as Whim Shaft (Site No. 13). The condition of the Hedge was found to vary considerably along its length, measuring up to 1 metre high and 1 metre wide and truncated in places, to create forestry access routes. The recommendations for this feature were the same as those included for the long term preservation of earthwork features in a woodland environment. The Hedge was located outside of the Site boundary, so was not surveyed.
Other details: Site No. 3
