Possibly one of three small 18th century mine setts operating in Maddacleave Wood described in documentary sources. It exhibits the characteristic lode back openwork excavation up and down the steep side of the hill in a north-east to south-west direction. It was also re-investigated in the early 20th century . The openwork extends for approximately 150 metres down the hillside at an oblique angle, with numerous pits in the steep sided banks, almost to the top of the New Quay ore shoot retaining wall. The banks vary from 1.5 to 3.0 metres deep and the spoil pits on the downslope side from 1.0 to 3.0 metres high. Other details: Figure 35, site 4. Map object based on this Source.

The historical background indicated that three small mine setts were possibly operating in Maddacleave Wood in the 18th century, and this feature might be one of them. The surviving earthwork measured approximately 150 metres long with banks varying in height from 1.5 metres to 3 metres, and spoil pits on the downslope side measuring from 1 metre to 3 metres high. The 18th Century Gunnis/Openwork was not surveyed, being located outside of the Site boundary. Other details: Site No. 4.
