Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 26 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The 1867 maps show this site as a probable wheelpit, providing power for the Bedford Consols main dressing floor, which would have been on its north side. The water supply would probably have come from the nearby reservoir pond. The wheelpit has been infilled to approximately 0.7 metres below ground level and the sides appear for the most part to be visible as an earthwork. It is approximately 8.0 metres long internally and 2.0 metres wide. There is a small amount of masonry visible for a length of 0.7 metres and a height of 0.5 metres at the east end of the south side. Other details: Figure 35, site 7.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 40 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

1867, although it was not labelled on later historic Ordnance Survey maps. In 2006 the Wheel pit was found to be infilled to circa 0.7 metres below the ground level, but the sides remained visible as an earthwork, enclosing an internal area of circa 8 metres long by 2 metres wide. A small amount of masonry was visible at the east end of the south side, measuring approximately 0.7 metres long by 0.5 metres high. The Wheelpit was located beyond the Site boundary, so was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 7.
