Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Building shown to east of 'Old Shaft'.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 27 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The building, shown on the 1867 Bedford Estates map, was probably constructed in the 1850s to pump water up the shaft to the reservoir using flat rods and a balance bob mechanism. The steam engine was presumably a small rotary engine which not only pumped the Engine Shaft but may have had a small copper crusher attached. The site is marked by an elongated pit, 8 metres long, 5 metres wide and 1 metre deep. There are masonry wall remnants along the west side of the pit which are 0.7 metres high for a length of 2 metres. There are likely to be more walled remains buried in the sides of the pit. Other details: Figure 35, site 9.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 42 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The 1867 Bedford Estates Map illustrated this site as a Reservoir Pond, supplying the former Dressing Floor (Site No. 7.1) and steam engine. In 2006 the earth banked side sides of the rectangular reservoir were visible, although the feature was partly obscured by trees and woodland detritus. The earthwork measured approximately 18 metres by 18 metres with surviving north and west sides. The interior of the reservoir was approximately 0.5 metres below the ground surface, and the top of the banked walls approximately 0.5 metres to 0.7 metres above ground level. It was recommended that trees should be removed from the feature and stumps treated. Moreover, the arisings from any vegetation clearance should be removed from the area so as not to obscure the leats. The Reservoir Pond was located beyond the Site boundary and was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 9.
