Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 27 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Shaft with balance bob pit shown on 1867 Bedford Estate map, which survives as an elongated pit 4 metres wide and 6 metres long, with its base 1 metre below ground level. The shaft is choked although it is not immediately visible as a depression. Other details: Figures 5- 6 and 35, site 10.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 43 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The Engine Shaft associated with the Engine and Boiler House (Site No. 9), was most likely used to pump out the workings below. In 2006 the remains formed an elongated pit encompassing the balance bob pit and shaft, measuring approximately 4 metres wide by 6 metres long, with the shaft choked to approximately 1 metre below the ground surface. A tree was recorded growing from the centre. The capstan or horse whim was recorded to the south (Site No. 10.1) at SX 45963 69294. It was recommended that trees growing from the base of the balance bob pit were removed. The Engine Shaft was located beyond the Site boundary and was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 10.
