Name:Tinners' hut on the East Dart River


Remains of a medieval or later tinner's hut situated on the left bank of the East Dart River. The rectangular structure measures 4.8m by 2.1m with turf-covered walls up to 0.6m high.

Full description

RCHM APP 1985, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV267439.

Ruined hut. Vis=12/9/1975 (le messurier, b. ) orientation: ssw-nne. Walls are heather-grown. Rushy interior. Fireplace or cupboard at n end, but covered by vegetation. Tin streaming carried on here. Preserved by its remoteness. Measures 4.9 x 2.1m. Vis=2/10/1979 (os). At sx60988458. As described by lemessurier except that no fireplace is visible. Drystone walling 0.5m high and 1.2m wide with an entrance to the east. Vis=visible on nmr 1969 ap, its position and orientation are different on the 1:10560, 1954 os map (rchm app 1985).

The remains of this tinners hut lie in deep reed and grass vegetation on a slight island in the river bed. They are generally as described (Fletcher, M., 20/10/2003, English Heritage Field Investigation)
