Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Rectangular building shown to south-west of 'Shaft'.
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 29-30 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.
This building appears to function to transfer flat rods (via an angle bob) to a higher level (on a timber frame) above the track west of Whim Shaft, to the angle bob pit on the south-west side of the shaft. It has been interpreted as housing the angle bob, and would have increased the height of the flat rods by about 3 metres. The building is a rectangular shaped masonry structure in a relatively good condition with a narrow gap between two long walls facing the downslope flat rod channel. The rear (eastern) wall is 2.5 metres wide and 3.2 metres high (above internal ground level). The two side walls are 2.7 metres wide and 3.2 metres high also. The small sections of the western wall from each side wall return to the narrow slot is 0.6 metres wide and 1.6 metres high. The narrow slot is 0.4 metres wide, approximately 1 metres high for a length of approximately 2 metres. The base of the slot is infilled to an unknown depth, and may be deeper. Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 47 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.
The building was shown on the 1882 Ordnance Survey map and appears to have functioned to transfer the flat rods, which transferred motion, via an angle bob, to a high level, west of the Whim Shaft Angle Bob Pit (Site No. 13.2) above. In 2006, the building formed a rectangular shaped masonry structure, with walls surviving up to 3.2 metres high and 2.7 metres wide. The Flat Rod Cutting (Site No. 14.1) at SX 45372 68456 to SX 45697 69153 was clearly identified running south-west towards Fullers Shaft (Site No. 18). It was recommended that the walls of the Flat Rod Building should be capped and repointed, along with some tree clearance to improve visibility of the structure with fencing constructed on the upper ground near the east wall, given its close proximity to the nearby track. he Flat Rod Building was located beyond the Site boundary and was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 14.
