The south-west corner of field 990 on the 1880s-90s 25inch 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (south of the farm and church) looks suspiciously like the playing card shape of a Roman fort. There is also a straight track heading up from the river ('Broad Ford') and straight field boundaries in alignment with it on the west. This may possibly indicate a Roman fort or signal station, which although located between two areas of higher ground, it is in a commanding position for the river and ford, and on an easy route over the hill.
