Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 29-30 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Cutting for flat rods between Pearce's, Fuller's and Whim's shafts. The cutting extending from the flat rod building towards Fuller's shaft can be plainly seen, and measures approximately 0.7-0.9 metres wide with a very shallow depth of 0.2 metres below ground level to leaf-infilled surface level. The southern section is shown on the 1867 Bedford Consols/Gawton lodes/shafts map. Other details: Figures 5-6, 35, site 14.1.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 47 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The Flat Rod Cutting at SX 45372 68456 to SX 45697 69153 was clearly identified running south-west towards Fullers Shaft (Site No. 18). It measured between 0.7 metres and 0.9 metres wide, with a shallow depth of approximately 0.2 metres. The route of the Flat Rod cutting was not identified during the survey, being located on steep hillside within densely vegetated woodland. However, the landowner confirmed that on last inspection, the condition of the Flat Rod Cutting was the same as in 2006, although, as then, the earthwork was only intermittently apparent along its route. On this basis the Flat Rod Cutting was assessed to be in medium condition.
Given the surviving form of the Flat Road Cutting, as a shallow earthwork depression, it was assessed to have low heritage significance, relative to other features on Site.
If resources/finances are available, then consideration could be given to vegetation clearance along the route of the Flat Rod Cutting so as to improve general visibility and improved legibility. Other details: Site No. 14.1.
