Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 28 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Shaft possibly cut in the 1850s and shown on the 1867 Bedford Estates survey map and Bedford Consols map of lodes and shafts. The site within which the shaft is located is wooded, but also characterised by pits and spoil heaps. The shaft site appears to be within a wide area, 10 metres north-south by 12 metres east-west, with a 3 metres bank on the east side of the open area. The shaft is presumably choked to the surface. Other details: Figures 5-6, 35, site 12.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 45 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The 1867 Bedford Estates Lode map labelled the shaft as working. In 2006 the shaft was thought to be located in an area of woodland characterised by pits and spoil heaps. The site of the shaft was not securely located but thought likely to occupy an area measuring approximately 10 metres by 12 metres, delineated by a bank on its east side. The shaft was assumed to be choked. Lode back pits up to 1metre deep with spoil heaps up 2 metres high were also recorded, scattered to both the north and south of the probable shaft site (Site No. 12.1) at SX 45776 69221. It was recommended that the site of the shaft should be confirmed, and the area immediately fenced with adequate warning signs erected. Sims Shaft was located beyond the Site boundary, so was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 12.
