Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

'Shaft' shown. Map object based on this Source.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 29 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The former winding shaft, shown on 1867 Bedford Consols lode/shaft map as 'filled', measures 2.5 metres by 3 metres and is within a shallow depression 0.4 metres deep. It is located in an area covered by mine waste rubble and has a banked area of rubble on its east side. A fence runs parallel to the track along the shaft's south side, and there appears to be no movement to the shaft fill. There is a horse Whim immediately to the west. Other details: Figures 5-6, 35, site 13.

Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 46 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

On the 1867 Bedford Estates Lode map, Whim Shaft is labelled as filled. A horse whim was also shown immediately west of the shaft (Site No. 13.1) at SX 45684 69158. In 2006, the former shaft was found to be infilled, marked by a shallow depression measuring approximately 0.4 metres deep by 2.5 metres wide and 3 metres long, in an area covered by mine waste. An earthwork on the south side of the shaft was thought to be the remains of a flat rod channel, or possibly an infilled Angle Bob Pit (Site No. 13.2) at SX 45686 69140. If public access routes were expected to pass nearby then it was recommended that the shaft should be securely fenced, and a warning sign erected. Given the importance of the shaft, it was also felt consideration should be given to an interpretation board. Whim Shaft was located beyond the Site boundary, so was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 13.
