Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 30 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The adit appears to be partially collapsed back from an unknown portal position. The ground above the existing opening is not particularly stable and measures approximately 3 metre in height, and has collapsed on its north side. The present opening is 0.7 metres high above water level, and 1.2 metres wide. Ochreous mine water is slowly flowing out of the adit and is approximately 0.5 metres deep within the adit. Other details: Figures 5-6, 19, 35, site 15.

Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.

'Level (disused)' shown.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 48 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The Shallow Adit was recorded on the historic 1867 Bedford Estates Maps. In 2006, the adit appeared to have partially collapsed back from an unknown portal position. The ground above the opening was approximately 3 metres higher and had collapsed on its north side. The present opening was 0.7 metres high and 1.2 metres wide. Ocherous mine water was recorded issuing from the adit. The adjacent Mine Waste Heap was located at SX 45685 69202. Given the unstable nature of the ground it was recommended that the opening should be grilled and secured with a hinged padlocked access gate. The Shallow Adit was located beyond the Site boundary and not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 15.
