Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Row of buildings shown.
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 31 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.
Buildings described as 'The office, carpenter's shop, smith's shop, and material house' were completed in 1853, and are shown on the 1867 Bedford Estates maps. The ground has been cut from the hillside to form a surface upon which the buildings have been founded (adjacent to the upper hillslope). The site is very overgrown with trees and bushes. Only sections of a rear wall, 2.7 metres high, are visible, the remainder seems to have been robbed or collapsed. Other details: Figures 5-6, 35, site 16.
Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.
Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 49 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.
The buildings were illustrated on the 1867 Bedford Estates maps, as well as later historic Ordnance Survey maps. In 2006, the terrace upon which the buildings were constructed was found to be very overgrown with trees and bushes. Only remnants of rear walling were visible, surviving to a maximum height of 2.7 metres. The Site of Building (Site No. 16.1) at SX 45638 69131 and Possible Mine Magazine (Site No. 16.2) at SX 45611 69136 were also recorded, although no standing remains were identified. The Mine Buildings were beyond the Site boundary and not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 16.
