Full description
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 31 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.
This feature is not mentioned in documentary sources or shown on any archive maps. It is located at the south end of an open area cut from the hillside, south of the site of a possible sump house. The water may have been pumped up to the surface at this point and into this building. Alternatively it could be a shaft or stope entrance, as it is close to the point where the Main Lode was heaved to the south by the Cross course. The vertical opening, which is below a 4 metres high upslope bank, seems to have been infilled then partially subsided. It inclines vertically to the south and is then choked at a depth of approximately 4 metres below ground level. The narrow opening at the surface is 2.5 metres from east to west and 0.8 metres from north to south. Other details: Figure 35, site 17. Map object based on this Source.

A possible shaft was recorded during the 2006 survey, although this feature was not recorded on any historical maps. The vertical infilled opening was located beneath a 4 metres high bank. It inclined to the south and was choked at a depth of approximately 4 metres below the ground level. The narrow opening measured approximately 2.5 metresby 0.8 metres. It was recommended that the shaft should be fenced. The Sump Shaft was not surveyed, being located beyond the Site boundary. Other details: Site No. 17.
