Full description

Buck, C., 2009, South Hooe Mine, Bere Alston, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 36 (Report - Assessment). SDV344692.

A line of mine buildings are shown on the mine plan of 1856, labelled as 'Smith's, Carpenter's, Shops etc'. They extend eastwards from the boiler house, and may have been able to utilise steam power from there. The linear site was created cutting a flat section from south facing sloping ground, with the rear wall of the buildings acting as a retaining wall. All that remains is a 6 metres section of rear vertical walling (1.6 metres high) at the west end, close to the vertical rock cut of the boiler house. A section of west wall (1.9 metres high by approximately 5 metres long) with a small fireplace is also visible. The site of the remainder of the buildings is visible, but the sides and rear walls have gone, although there may be foundation remains below ground level. Other details: Figures 6-8, 15, site 6.

Dilapidated single storey shed next to the vegetable garden in the east part of the site, formerly carpenter's shop or blacksmith's. Other details: Figures 1, 3, 7.
