The hillside was excavated to form a path upon which a tramway was built, in order to transport the coal from the quay on the foreshore up to the mine. The pathway, 1.5 to 2 metres wide, is visible and can be partially walked, until vegetation growth restricts access towards the bottom. The remains of a low revetment surface, on the edge of the river foreshore, indicate the site of the tramline above high tide level, before it went on to the timber quay. This feature is approximately 20 metres long, and formed by stones placed on edge on its south side, forming a height of about 0.2 - 0.5 metres above foreshore level. The tramway is shown on the 1856 plan of the mine, but only the pathway is shown on the 1883 Ordnance Survey map. Other details: Figures 6, 15, site 9.
