Full description
Buck, C., 2009, South Hooe Mine, Bere Alston, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 47 (Report - Assessment). SDV344692.
Grinder house powered by water wheel fed by a leat which entered the mine from the west. There is no surface evidence for either any upstanding remains of of the grinder house as shown on the 1856 plan of the mine. However there is a marked dip in the general slope of the steep valley side down to the river foreshore. Presumably the grinder house was constructed mainly of timber and was sited within the landscape dip (which may have been excavated for this purpose), the leat possibly being fed onto the top of the water wheel from surface level.
