Full description

Buck, C., 2009, South Hooe Mine, Bere Alston, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 48 (Report - Assessment). SDV344692.

The route of the tramway between the shipping quay and stamps dressing floors is shown on the 1856 plan of the mine. This passed from below the crop dressing floors and ore grinder, past the ore stores to the stamps dressing floors and the stamps engine. This horse or donkey drawn tramway took ore ready for further dressing to the stamps, and after processing, to the ore store, and then to the shipping quay. There is little surface evidence for the route of this tramway as shown on the plan. In some places the edge of the tramway has collapsed onto the foreshore, or been eroded by high tides. However it can still be seen in a few places in the wooded area close to the ore stores, and as it goes uphill through the wood towards the stamps site. It is evidenced as a vaguely linear route, 1 metre wide, through the vegetation, and in some places evidence of a low cutting as it goes through some higher ground.
