It is suggested that the group of hangman names (Great Hangman’s Copse and Little Hangman’s Copse and Hangman’s Hill Cross) refer to the site of a hangman’s dwelling or land given to a hangman, rather than a place of execution which was probably sited on Gibbets Moor.
