Full description

Farnell, A. J., 2009, An Archaeological Trench Evaluation on Land Between Hill Barton Industrial Estate and the A3052 Exeter to Sidmouth Road, 4, 7, 10-12 (Report - Evaluation). SDV345091.

A shallow ditch, aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, was located towards the east end of trench 19. It measured approximately 3.25 metres wide, 0.56 metres deep and was exposed to a length of 2.4 metres within the area of excavation. Its profile was asymmetrical, with moderately steeply sloping sides on the west and and gently sloping on the east. A significant volume of Roman pottery was recovered from the secondary fill, which appeared to represent deliberate infilling. This is one of a group of features which are likely to represent boundaries and divisions associated with a rural settlement or farmstead dating from the first to the fourth centuries. Other details: Figures 5, 7/6,.
