7-15, Meddon Street.
Range of houses and shop of one build, likely to have been a single house originally; now rearranged as 3 separate dwellings. Probably mid 17th century.
Solid rendered walls with faint traces of masonry markings. Slate roof. Cluster of 4 diagonally-set rendered chimneys (probably of brick) on centre of ridge; another pair at left-hand end, just behind the ridge. Old photograph (probably of about 1920; copy in possession of the owner of Numbers 7-9) shows a matching pair of chimneys at the right-hand end of the range. Ordinary rendered chimney at rear end of right-hand rear wing.
Front range, 1 room deep and probably 4 rooms wide; Numbers 7-9, to left of the central chimney, is 2 rooms wide with a staircase at the rear, adjoining the chimney. At rear, a line of lean-tos (probably added) abutting a long rear wing in the right. 2 storeys with garret; 6-window range. Numbers 7-9 have a late 19th century or early 20th century shop front to left; flanking pilasters, entablature with round-headed, bracketed block at either end. Left-hand upper-storey window has sashes with margin-panes and horns; blind window to right of it and then one with 20th century wood casement. At Numbers 11-13, the outer windows in both storeys have small-paned mullioned-and-transomed casements (probably 19th century). Middle window in ground storey has late 20th century wood frame; window above is blind. At right-hand end is the doorway to an open passage, leading to Number 15 at the rear. Moulded wooden board at eaves-level, extending across the whole front. Rising above it at each end is a triangular dormer gable with plain bargeboards; gable to left has 2-light wood casement window with 6 panes per light.
Interior inspected at Numbers 7-9 only. This has been thoroughly refurbished in 20th century, although original features may be concealed under plaster and boarding . Chimneys are of stone rubble at garret-level.
The houses appear to be shown as a single dwelling on Wood's 1842 map of Bideford. It is clearly an old building, despite the fact that its detail is mainly 19th century. The chimneys are the best feature; diagonally-set brick shafts like these were fashionable in Barnstaple in the mid 17th century.
