Summary

One of at least 15 hut circles identified by field and aerial survey on the south-west facing slopes east of Cholwich Town Clay Works. The hut circles are associated with enclosures and field boundaries as part of a wider settlement of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date.

Full description

Ashbrook, K., 1978, Enclosure east of Clay Works (Site Visit). SDV167443.

One hut is visible on the east side of the pound in the portion to the north of the boundary wall, but it is possible that there are traces of other huts in the wood.

Remains of an enclosed hut circle are situated on the north east side of a modern field wall. The hut is of Type 2, much robbed, with an internal diameter of 4.7 meters and double-faced walling on the upper side, 1.3 meters wide, just protruding through the turf.

Hut circle in semi-circular enclosure in the southern part of Settlement 'C' at 'Parkland enclosures'. It is one of 16 hut circles in the settlement of between 5.0 to 7.0 metres in diameter.

A possible hut circle is identifiable as an earthwork.

The hut circle is obscured by tree cover.

A possible hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date is identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as a roughly oval hollow or platform approximately 4m across, defined by a low earthwork bank circa 1.5m wide.
The possible hut circle is located within a possible enclosure recorded as MDV5540, part of the wider settlement and associated field system recorded as MDV79188.
The earthworks are obscured from view by tree cover on all aerial photographs available to the survey.
