Cropmarks which have formed over infilled ditches of a possible prehistoric ring ditch are visible on oblique aerial photographs of 1984 onwards, to the north of Hayes Farm. The fairly well-defined circular cropmark measures approximately 12m in diameter and is located within an area where a cluster of other possible ring ditches have also been recorded, including a much larger ring ditch to the immediate northeast, in addition to a number of enclosures in close proximity to the southwest. The area has been subject to fairly extensive aerial survey.

Lawton, J., 2016, Exeter Gateway, Hayes Farm, Clyst Honiton, Devon: Geophysical Survey (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV366371.

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Cotswold Archaeology to undertake an archaeological geophysical (gradiometer) survey to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains at Exeter Gateway as part of the second phase of works. The survey area has previously been investigated and partially evaluated which produced evidence of multi phased activity. The potential for further archaeological remains to be located in the survey results is high.

The survey identified a number of anomalies and features related to archaeological activity in the site area. These comprised both curvilinear and rectilinear anomalies as well as possible pit like features. The archaeology would appear to also follow known archaeological structures such as ring ditches, three rectilinear enclosures and possible funeral activity. Further archaeological remains have also been revealed some of which were previously unknown. A number of possible settlement remains have been revealed that could also be geological responses in the data set along with agricultural trends related to ploughing regimes; a number of modern anomalies were also detected within the survey area related to field boundaries.

This ring ditch (anomaly E3), shows up very clearly in the survey.
