Full description

E.C.D., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV163620.

The parish church of st. Mary. Essentially a cruciform 13th. Century plan, remodelled in the 15th. Century by the enlargements of the transepts into aisles both eastwards and westwards, with the addition of later chancel chapels. The 13th. Century west tower is surmounted by a spire. There is a 12th. Century font - one of only three in the country - as well as a 15th. Century rood screen. The lateral windows are large and appear to have lost their tracery (hoskins). The tenor bell bears an inscription and the date 1763. Three portuguese coins are let into the bell, probably in commemoration of england's assistance to portugal during the spanish invasion of that country in 1763 (e. C. D. ).
