Full description

Fisher, J., 1999, East Devon Conservation Area Appraisals: East Budleigh, 6, 8 (Report - non-specific). SDV346582.

In High Street there is a very good range of cob and thatch, especially on the west side. As well as plain vernacular the frontage continues through to classical detailing, but is done so in a manner that is perfectly in scale and proportion to the overall profile. Other details: Maps.

Cottage. Probably 18th century, possibly earlier, refurbished in late 19th century. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble or brick stacks with late 19th century brick chimney shafts and one Rolle Estate chimney pot; thatch roof. Two-room plan cottage facing east onto High Street. The left (southern) room has a front lateral stack, the right room has a rear lateral stack. Outshot to rear of left room. Two storeys. Irregular 2-window front of 19th century casements of various sizes and containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The ground floor right window has 1 light with glazing bars, the other leaded in 20th century. Doorway a little right of centre contains late 19th - early 20th century 4-panel door and 20th century gabled end slated hood on raking struts. The stack to left has a tall chimney shaft and the wall to left recesses slightly.
Interior not available for inspection at time of survey but the owners says that there is no exposed carpentry detail and that the roof is inaccessible.
No. 11 High Street is one of a group of attractive and varied buildings, most of them listed, which line High Street as it rises to the Church of All Saints.
