Full description

Pool in the bend of the Dean Burn river indicated on 19th century map.

Hope, R. C., 1893, Holy Wells of England, 64 (Monograph). SDV162427.

Hope calls it the "Pool of the Black Hound'. He gives a full account of the legend.

Binnall, P. B. G., 1940 - 1941, Holy Wells in Devonshire, 123 (Article in Serial). SDV70316.

The Hound's Pool: This lies at the foot of a deep hollow in Dean Combe hamlet. Said to be inhabited by the spirit of a weaver who was turned into a black hound.

(01/061960) Resident of Dean Combe Farm described Hound's Pool and its position on Dean Burn was pointed out. Known it as 'Hound's Pool'. It consists of a bend or elbow in the stream at SX 7117 6469 forming a circular cut-back 8.0m. in diameter and 2.0 m. deep.
