Full description

Child, P., 1997, Buckhurst Cottage, Plymtree, Devon (Correspondence). SDV346873.

Damaged by fire. The roof structure demonstrates that the building was constructed intwo phases, with the section furthest from the road probably originally being a single-roomed cottage of early 18th century date. It is intended that the roof timbers should largely be retained during repairs.

Buckhurst.
Cottage. Mid - late 17th century. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stack topped with 20th century brick; thatch roof.
Plan: small 2-room cottage facing south. An axial stack between the rooms serves the right (east) room. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 2-window front. The right windows are late 19th - early 20th century casements with glazing bars. These are larger than the others and the first floor one is a half dormer. The ground floor left window is a late 17th century oak flat-faced mullion window and the first floor window is contemporary (maybe a little earlier) with chamfered mullion. Both these contain rectangular panes of leaded glass andthe original iron casement of the ground floor window has an ornate catch. The front doorway is at the left end and it contains a 20th century plank door under a contemporary hood on curving brackets. The roof is half-hipped both ends.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of the survey but original 17th century carpentry detail is suspected.
