Full description

Fisher, J., 1999, East Devon Conservation Area Appraisals: Whimple, 6 (Report - non-specific). SDV347093.

At Knowle Cross, near the road junction, are several 18th and early 19th century cob cottages with hipped thatched roofs. These are survivals of plain one or two room ground floor plans, probably former squatter cottages, as they immediately front the road with no land behind.

English Heritage, 2011, Historic Houses Register (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV346128.

Cottage. Probably 18th century, modernised circa 1970. Plastered cob, with or without stone footings; cob or stone rubble stacks topped with 20th century brick; thatch roof. Plan: L-plan cottage. The main block faces south and has a two-room plan. The left (west) room has a rear lateral stack and the right room has a maybe secondary end stack. One-room plan rear block at right angles behind the right end. Two storeys. Exterior: nearly symmetrical two-window front of 20th century casements with glazing bars. Central doorway contains a 20th century door behind a contemporary gabled and thatch-roofed porch. Roof is hipped both end. Interior: has plain carpenty detail. Some old beams were introduced as replacements circa 1970. Roof not inspected. Knowle Cross Cottage is one of an attractive group of small thatch-roofed cottages at Knowle Cross.
