Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Dressing floor and three round buddles shown on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map.

Passmore, A., 2009, Archaeological Recording at Anderton Mine, Tavistock, Devon, 3; Figures 2-4 (Report - Watching Brief). SDV347943.

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the construction of the Anderton Mine to Grenofen Tunnel Cycleway. One of the buddles within the dressing floor was partially exposed, and located to the north of this was an east-west aligned stone feature, the top of which was level with the natural subsoil into which it was constructed. The top of the feature comprised a row of alternating large and small stones in soldier coursing, overlying, where visible, horizontally laid stones. Water was welling up from between these stones, suggesting the feature is a culvert, possibly to drain waste water away from the buddle after processing. Immediately south of the buddle, the heavily truncated remains of a wall were exposed, constructed of densely packed slates, which may represent the basal course of a revetment wall defining the rear of the dressing floor.

Newman, P., 2011, Mining in the Tavy Valley, West Devon. An Assessment of Archaeological Potential, 12, Fig 4 (Report - Assessment). SDV347105.

Anderton Mine has a split location. The old mine is in the valley of the Tiddy Brook to the east of the modern A386. the later section is at Anderton, a farm to the west of the road. At the former site there was once an engine huse, water-powered stamping mill and a dressing floor with round buddles.
